Headaches – A pain in the neck

headache1Recently I saw a young girl of 10 years of age who had been suffering headaches on a daily basis for 2 years. She had been to the GP, had a CT scan whereby nothing abnormal was detected and was prescribed pain killing medication.

She had some relief from acupuncture whereby she was only getting on average 1 headache per week and was able to reduce the pain medication but once the course of treatment finished the headaches returned.

When I first saw her, the muscles of the upper neck and shoulders were like rods of iron and she had a restriction in one of the joints in her neck which is a common cause of headaches.

Needless to say on her second visit the muscles were softer to the touch and her mother reported that she only had 1 mild headache in the week. I asked the mother to wean her off the medication and on her 3rd visit 2 weeks later she did not have a headache and was clear of all medication.

The point I am trying to make is that a lot of headache occur due to neck issues (cervicogenic headaches) and are easily rectified if the person suffering is seen by someone who specialises in muscloskeletal issues.

What I am finding more and more is that people will present to their GP with muscloskeletal problems whereby usually they are given pain medication which may help alleviate the pain for a short term but will not normally treat the causative factor.

At Joy Lane Clinic we specialise in muscloskeletal issues and pride ourselves in returning a person to normal function in as less time as possible, on average 2 to 3 treatments.
